Goodman vs Carrier vs Trane: Honest NJ Comparison
The same question every NJ homeowner asks before a $7K+ replacement. Real differences from a service tech who repairs all three.
Goodman
Best price-to-warranty ratio. Lifetime compressor coverage on registered premium models.
Strength: Lifetime compressor warranty, value pricing, Daikin-backed technology.
Tradeoff: Mid-tier reliability ranking. Capacitors and condensate components often need attention by year 7-9.
NJ install range: $5,200-$15,400.
Carrier
Top-tier reliability. Highest install cost but lowest predicted lifetime repair cost.
Strength: Top Consumer Reports 2024 reliability tier; longest historical NJ field track record.
Tradeoff: 10-year compressor warranty cap; $1,800-$3,200 higher install cost on comparable equipment.
NJ install range: $7,400-$18,200 for matched Infinity.
Trane
Mid-tier price, strong variable-speed platform, proprietary parts.
Strength: TruComfort variable-speed performance, well-regarded indoor air quality integration.
Tradeoff: 10-year compressor warranty cap; proprietary parts can raise out-of-warranty repair bills.
NJ install range: $6,800-$16,400.
Bottom line:
Choose Carrier if budget is secondary and you want the lowest predicted lifetime repair cost. Choose Trane if you want strong variable-speed performance at a mid price. Choose Goodman if you want premium-tier features and warranty coverage at value pricing — especially the lifetime compressor warranty on GSZV9, GSXC, GSXH, and DSZC models that Carrier and Trane both cap at 10 years.
Goodman Error Codes & What They Mean
Modern Goodman systems flash LED diagnostic codes inside the air handler or furnace cabinet. Decode the most common codes before you call.
1 flash – Open high-limit switch
Typical cause: dirty filter, blocked supply registers, or closed dampers cause the heat exchanger to overheat. Replace the filter, open all supply registers, and the code typically clears on the next cycle.
3 flashes – Pressure switch fault
Typical cause: clogged condensate drain on AC mode, restricted exhaust on heating mode, or a failed inducer motor. Clear the condensate drain first; if the code persists, call a tech.
4 flashes – Open thermal fuse on gas valve
Gas-side fault. Do not run the system. Call a licensed HVAC technician same-day.
7 flashes – Flame sensor or ignition lockout
Most common cause: oxidized flame sensor. A 5-minute cleaning typically restores ignition. Persistent lockout after cleaning means a deeper gas-train issue.
Rapid continuous flashing – ComfortBridge communication fault
Indoor and outdoor controls cannot talk to each other. Common causes: corroded thermostat wire, failed control board, or a non-ComfortBridge thermostat installed on a ComfortBridge system.
